Open letter to Admiral James Stavridis, regarding his views on the importance of Turkey, as these were published on his website http://useucom.wordpress.com/2010/08/30/vitality-of-turkey-a-strong-nato-ally/
Dear Sir, Commander, U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Admiral James Stavridis
with all respect and sincere admiration,
there may be another country in the region far more important than Turkey in terms of geopolitics. Kurdistan is placed exactly in the heart of the Middle East. It is fortified by nature (predominantly mountainous regions), located on the crossroad between the Mediterranean and Asia, between Europe (Caucasus) and the lands of the Arabs and Persians. Kurdistan has the potential for a close alliance between three of the most important Diasporas in the US : the Jews, the Greeks and the Armenians. Its population is liberal, with a native, very ancient culture that resists religious fanaticism and emphasises on human rights and co-existence with all religions. The Kurds are young and dynamic with a world wide developing and rising Diaspora of tens of millions. The natural resources in their lands are also very rich.
Turkey is a country where masses are hiding their religious and ethnic identity. The oppressive nationalist regime introduced by Kemal failed to unite the different ethnic and religious groups under a common ideology. Kemal fiercely fought against the presence of Christianity in Turkey, and his successors continue his struggle up to nowadays. Instead of uniting their people, their extremist policies implemented further and deeper divisions. Please take a note of the recent executions of Christian Protestant and Christian Catholic clergy in Turkey. For some peculiar reason, the animosity of Turkish extremists often fails to make the lines in western media, with few exceptions (eg http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6524Z920100603). Entire regions in Turkey are fighting in arms for the opportunity to gain their independence. Other regions just wait and pray for the opportunity of freedom. In my opinion, from the moment the US and Europe form a close alliance with Russia, what is nowadays called Turkey is going to be transformed into “Euroanatolia,” a confederation of regions, mainly Christian and Alevi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alevi). The Alevi are a dynamic and cosmopolitan religious movement that together with the tens of millions of hiding and persecuted Zoroastrians, Copts, Jews, and other Christians, could confront, transform and enlighten the religious fanatics in the entire Middle East.
The so called civilised world cannot remain silent for much longer in front of the rise of religious extremism. From the moment the ancient monuments of Buddha were demolished in Afganistan, we have entered a new period in human history that could lead to new Dark Ages. We, the ‘civilised,’ should not remain passive and divided for much longer.
Yours faithfully
George Sidirountios
